With an estimated 250,000 boats to be sold in 2016, sales would grow between 6 and 7 percent this year with the continued rise in consumer confidence. The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) also expects dollar sales of recreational boats to rise between 10 and 11 percent from $8.4 billion.
Additionally, they predict that the new Trump administration will largely help the U.S.-based marine industry to thrive and continue to grow. NNMA President Thom Dammrich stated “I think the new administration is going to be very good for boating. I think it’s going to be an administration that will be very friendly to recreation.” With 95 percent of boats sold in the United States also made in this country, boating is one of the few original American-made industries.
Annual United States retail sales of new boats, marine accessories and marine engines totaled $36 billion in 2015 and are predicted to rise to $19.1 billion in 2016. The recreational boating industry in the United States has an annual economic impact of more than $121.5 billion, which includes direct, indirect and induced spending. It also supports 650,000 direct and indirect American jobs and nearly 35,000 small businesses.
The National Marine Manufacturers Association also identified top boating trends to watch in 2017, including, a continued increase in larger boat sales; a continued focus by manufacturers on introducing affordable and versatile boats to appeal to younger generations; increasingly intuitive marine technology; and a continued rise in a sharing economy around boating.
