According to a new law, California boaters ages 20 or younger are required to have a boater safety card showing successful completion of a boater safety course in order to be permitted to operate a motorized vehicle in water. Each following year on January 1st, more age groups will be added to the requirement so by 2025 all boaters will need to have a boater safety card.
The most efficient and cost-friendly way to meet this requirement is through the BoatUS Foundation’s free online Boating Safety Course, which has been approved by the DBW. “We’ve loaded the course with interactive animations, videos, and photos to give boaters an education that goes well beyond the basics of boating,” said BoatUS Foundation President Chris Edmonston. “The best part of all is that our course is free and can be taken at home. It’s designed so that you can stop and then continue at any time,” added Edmonston. Once the course is completed, boaters can print their own certificate and in 2018 the state will begin to issue official California Boater Education Cards to those who have completed the course within the year.
This free, online course can be found at http://www.boatus.org/california/ so make sure to sign up and complete it before summer comes around!
