Whether you’re still sailing your used San Diego boat from the ‘90s or have upgraded to a luxurious and spacious yacht, many boating enthusiasts find that they appreciate and sometimes enjoy their vessel more when they belong to a yacht club. In addition to broadening your horizons and meeting others who share the same interests, most clubs hold activities such as cruise outs or races where you can become even more involved in the sailing culture.
If you’re interested in joining a yacht club in the San Diego area, we’ve listed three of the most popular and well known clubs:
San Diego Yacht Club
Located on the San Diego Bay in Point Loma, the San Diego Yacht Club is part of the area’s history and has been at this location since 1924. With facilities open all year, you’ll find 576 boat slips with dry storage for 161 boats. Other amenities include picnic areas, a swimming pool, fitness center, gift shop, dining room with banquet facilities, and a snack bar which is open during the warm summer months. While the yacht club’s year-round Junior Program attracts many, there are also adult sailing classes and races for those who recently purchased a boat in San Diego.
Silver Gate Yacht Club
The Silver Gate Yacht Club was founded in 1952 and has brought together sailors, fishermen, power boaters, and racers who have a love for the water. They are well known for hosting three nationally recognized charitable events, the Schooner Cup, the Wheelchair Regatta, and the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge. While there are docks available for guests, the club itself is able to accommodate 145 boats. The club also has a facility for private parties and banquets, a patio for barbeques, and a bar that boasts a fantastic view of San Diego Bay and Shelter Island Yacht Basin.
Southwestern Yacht Club
The SWYC is set on a sprawling 11.7 acres of water and on 3.7 acres of land that overlooks Point Loma and the San Diego Bay. In 2010, the club opened a new state-of-the art dining and clubhouse facility with enhanced member space and outdoor decks as well as a new kitchen. The club also boasts 385 slips, 287 parking spaces for its active members, a group of individuals who are fans of a wide range of activities including angling, sailing and cruiser navigation.
While yacht clubs often have a robust and active membership, many are actively looking for more great additions.
